My mini Aussie absolutely loved it. We took the Horton Springs Trail on the way down to Horton Springs. Horton Springs is a spring on the Mogollon Rim that leads into Horton Creek. To find the trailhead from the parking area, cross back across the small paved bridge and hike towards the campground. Hiking a long the water is awesome and there are many shaded spots along the path.Horton Creek Trail [CLOSED] is a 13.4 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Payson, Arizona that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. From the trailhead it’s 8 miles round … The trail runs through a pine forest and is easy to follow. It’s a nice trail that has clear paths.
you will easily miss out on some beautiful photo opportunities if you stay on the main trail.Arizona Office of Tourism, 2702 N. 3rd St., Suite 4015 , Phoenix, AZ, 85004, Phone: 888-520-3434, Fax: 602-240-5432, mfioritt@pni.comGreat trail.
Reply. azutopia May 26, 2018. Most of the Trail is easy until the end portion which switches back several times to climb up where it meets the Highline Trail. I didn’t hike the last bit after the small waterfall as that takes you to the Rim Road #300 without a Rim view.NOTE: As of July 2020, this trail is closed due to extreme fire danger. After 2.4 miles the trail crosses the dry headwaters of Horton Creek. Great area to combine other trails to form a loop hike.Very easy to get to. To get to the spring, follow the creek to …
Hiked in Saturday morning with my 10 year old and dog and set up camp along the creek. It’s pretty steady and one you can bring the family too. Between the waterfalls, the wildflowers, and the many maples, this is a beautiful destination to hike year round, or to backpack and explore. There were alot of cairns so not sure how.
There were a few hours we didn’t see anyone at all.Hi cougars, went on this hike with my best friend. For the first mile or so, the trail skirts a bubbling creek. Horton Springs was a beautiful day hike out if Payson, AZ. Roughly 4 miles to the end of the springs, a river running in the mountain and down the creek.
There are campsites near the springs, and several hiking trails in the area that lead to the spring itself. We ran into an Arizona Black Rattlesnake on the trail as well! One thing not many mentioned before which is fairly important to know - poison ivy (and possibly oak) everywhere! The trail actually starts from the campground on the other side of the road.
If you choose to continue after the spring (4 mile mark) it is mega steep. If you park along road the trail is to the right of bridge. tons of places to camp for the night.
Exhausting to go up and tricky to navigate down. ( 2015: rerouted lower near creek ) Just before the springs you will encounter an intersection with the Highline Trail #31. Fill up your water here and enjoy the day. The signed trailhead will be on your left.
We all made it up and back within about 4-5 hours though, even though none of us are very experienced hikers. It is not super obvious.
Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. The trail starts in the Upper Tonto Creek Campground.Really enjoyed this one, though towards the end there the trail picks up in elevation gain and it’s on the verge of what I’d call a moderate to hard moderate trail. Many beautiful spots to stop and picnic along the way which is nice for keeping away from others. Hiked out Sunday morning about 9.
Agreed with others - parking can get busy if you are there on the weekend.
