You do need a Tonto pass to park. We drove back out 12 miles or so to the nearest gas station, and doubled back. Please remember, pack it in, pack it out! The trail has great views of Saguaro Lake.Beautiful hike along the coastline of the lake. The scenery can’t be beat, perfect views of the lake the entire time. Butcher Jones Recreation Site is a park in Arizona and has an elevation of 1539 feet. Well marked in and out trail with great views of the lake.Great hilly trail that provides gorgeous views of Suguaro Lake and wild flowers.Butcher Jones Trail [CLOSED] is a 7.9 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Tortilla Flat, Arizona that features a lake and is rated as moderate. Very beautiful views.I loved this hike. Butcher Jones Recreation Site. The picnic table areas closest to the parking areas were pretty clean. If you go within a few days after it rains, expect there to be mud a half a mile in. Butcher Jones Beach, which can be reached by a road a few miles north of Saguaro del Norte, features swimming, picnic and restroom facilities. They do not sell them there and are strict about each car having a pass to park... lots of law enforcement. It’s not worth it unless you like looking at beer cans, circle k cups and cactus for more then 2 miles cause the trail itself is actually 4. and be prepared to get pricked by at least a few plants because that’s how narrow it is. Its an easy trail with beautiful views of Four Peak, Saguaro Lake, and the Arizona landscape. Get there earlyThe Day Pass for Tonto National Forest is $8 and needs to be purchased ahead of time. Very rocky and a lot of cactus along the trail.
There’s a little area where you can hike down towards the water and hangout.We enjoyed this trail a lot. The Saguaro del Norte Recreation site is near the dam and includes Saguaro Lake Marina, which includes a restaurant and boat concession, a Maricopa County Sheriff's aid station, picnic tables, restrooms and boat ramps.

Dog friendly, kid friendly— just watch out for the trail edges as they have quite a bit of cacti to accidentally step on!Great trail, go early as it can get crowded. Bring sunscreen, water, and pack a lunch/snack- there’s a lot of great places to take a break and enjoy the views. Not too difficult of a hike and the perfect way to start your day — especially if you plan spending the rest of the day by the lake! At an average pace you’re looking at about a 3 hour completion. We saw a lot of trash in the water, very sad to see.this trail was not even worth the 12$ you actually have to pay to get in. We spent time at Butcher Jones rec area, which felt much like being at a real beach. Push past it- might not be the best for dogs (unless you don’t mind a muddy dogo). Our 1st trip to Butcher Jones was a complete bust for Father's Day. Trail is narrow, rocky in a few spots and lined with cactus. It gets a little dicey in some of the more narrow areas around the lake banks so be alert if you’ve got little ones with you. This trail takes you around the bend to follow Salt River, and from there you have an amazing view of four peaks. The boat itself was clean.
